Alexander Wang’s man gets his hands dirty for spring/summer 2015

image

The young wunderkind has scaled his own brand, known for its off-duty model aesthetic, and has become creative director of the storied French house – Balenciage.

Wang debuted his first runway collection for Autumn/Winter 2007 at New York Fashion Week. The response was immediate. Anna Wintour, a key supporter, soon mobilised her influence to bring attention to the young designer. In 2008, Wang received the top award from the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund, a sum of $200,000. In 2009, he was announced as the winner of the Swarovski Womenswear Designer of the Year, and as the winner of the Swiss Textiles Award.

Alexander Wang now produces both men’s and women’s collections, diffusion line T by Alexander Wang for men and women, footwear, and accessories. In 2011, Wang’s entry into menswear was noted by GQ, who named him Best Menswear Designer.

SPRING/SUMMER 2015

image

You could sense Wang’s urban emphasis and fabric-innovation focus in his latest collection.

Black, burgundy and navy, separates dominate the collection with an easy matching and mixing philosophy. Color blocking is embraced for tops that give the collection a graphic punch. Meanwhile leather is reworked providing for a tire-like surface and the ultimate edge to a dark spring collection.

His main point of differentiation is the material development; glazed raffia that approximated tweed and a foam-injected fabric repeating tire treads.

Slim utility pants, lengthened shorts, digital tie-dye-print knitwear, hybrid sweater-shirts, backpacks, and zip-front boots lined in orange like classic bomber jackets established a Wang travel wardrobe of sorts.

“so many flowers you can almost smell them”

After showing up for the first time in 2005, Giambattista Valli’s eponymous line quickly found a following among celebrities and socialites. The Italian designer, who shows in Paris, excels at high-drama dresses with experimental volumes and proportion. Feminine details in the form of ruffles and bows work to balance the sharp architectural lines, and they have helped put his evening looks on plenty of red carpets.

Clothes have been worn by the likes of celebrities Penélope Cruz, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Diane Kruger, Zoe Saldana, Julianne Moore, Brooke Shields and royalty like Her Majesty Rania of Jordan and princess Clotilde Courau.

RESORT 2015

Best in show were the pieces that keyed into Resort’s emerging 1970s trend: for day, a pair of those leg-elongating flares worn with a cardigan jacket in mismatched lace, and for evening, a bohemian beauty of a long dress in printed chiffon with a built-in capelet. Flower power, indeed."

The brand has more than 245 selling points in 41 countries worldwide and now it’s available at Splash by The Beach boutique – 129,Georgiou A’, CY-4048 Yermasoyia, Limassol. T: +357 25 318 803.

ERDEM – codes of femininity

image

ERDEM

Established in London in 2005 by Erdem Moralioglu.

Erdem Moralioglu is the multiple award winning founder of eponymous fashion label Erdem. Well known for his experimental textiles and intricate craftsmanship, Erdem has a coterie of high profile clients, such as Kate Middleton, Michelle Obama, Alexa Chung and Arizona Muse.

Erdem concentrates only on making women look beautiful. “I never think about what’s sexy,” he told Australian Vogue. “I don’t agonise over whether her bum will look big in something. I focus on the silhouettes and the proportions and hope that takes care of everything.”

RESORT 2015

The polka dot, the ruffle, the flower—elements erdem used over and over in the past.

Erdem’s Resort was hardly the descent into delicious chaos his note to self implied, but his desire to mess with things did produce a couple of the best pieces he’s ever shown.

THE NEW BRAND IN THE STORE

MARNI is an Italian fashion label founded by Consuelo Castiglioni in 1994.

Marni stemmed from Castiglioni’s husband’s family fur business and is still very much a family company, with husband Gianni running the brand as CEO and daughter Carolina operating the online store.

The line is known for quirky, feminine combinations of bright colors, bold graphic patterns, elaborate fantasy prints, and natural textures, including many furs. The result is an offbeat, funky aesthetic that remains elegant and wearable. It’s a look that can be carried off by a broad age spectrum of women.

Marni sells clothing in sixteen countries;boutiques locations include London, New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Beijing, Shanghai, Sydney, Moscow, Kuwait, Hong Kong and Tokyo and now it is available at Splash By The Beach boutique.

If art teachers were chic and rich, they’d probably wear Marni.”
