Roberto Cavalli: Imposing Luxury
With his imposing and vibrant designs, Roberto Cavalli has dedicated his life and career in representing women in their most glamorous and charming form. Striving for perfection, and with the impeccable attention to the detail, Cavalli invites us to his empire, to live the Italian dream:
Roberto Cavalli was born in 1940 in Florence, and he presented his eponymous collection in Paris when he was only 30. The fashion house proved that it is not only about the clothes; but also about the lifestyle and the “exotic elegance” as Vogue puts it.
His debut collection in 1970 is considered revolutionary as he paired materials like no one else did before: Printing on leather. A printing patented that attracted other houses such as Hermés and Pierre Cardin.
Cavalli presented his first printed jeans at the end of the 80’s, something that made the designer extremely popular, and it was followed by the presentation of his first “sand-blasted” pair of jeans for his Autumn/Winter 1994 collection. In 1995 he collaborated with Lycra to produce the stretch jeans. A new – and successful era was upon the designer.
Pop phenomenon Jennifer Lopez chose the Italian designer to design the costumes for her 2007 world tour. Lopez is one of the few superstars that trust and work with the designer.
A true pioneer, the designer celebrated his 40 years in the industry in 2010. The same year, Cavalli threw a flamboyant Parisian party, celebrating glamour, friendship and fashion, and attendees included Naomi Campbell, superstar Kylie Minoque and Taylor Swift. The fashion house was also ranked as the number one womenswear label on the Luxury Brand Status Index.
In March 2015, Norwegian designer Peter Dundas, known for his vibrant personality and elegant style, was appointed Creative Director of the prestigious Cavalli house. Dundas called this move as his “homecoming” as he was a designer at the house from 2002 – 2005.
Dundas went back to the label’s origin and worked on it to create a revolutionary collection – and so he did. For his grand return and the Spring/Summer 2016 collection, the designer has adapted a ‘80s vibe and aesthetic. Sexy body-con dresses, breathtaking high-waisted animal-print jeans, edgy biker jackets, one shoulder tops, and imposing prom skirts. Dundas found the “essence” of the brand.
THE DUNDAS EFFECT:
Peter Dundas dressed Kim Kardashian in the infamous dress made of crystals and feather for the MET Gala 2015. Kardashian was the first person to wear a Cavalli by Peter Dundas and the world has gone crazy over Dundas, anticipating his next move. Celebrities including the likes of supermodels Joan Smalls and Natasha Poly, Chiara Ferragni and Lena Perminova love Dundas’ outgoing personality and imposing yet elegant vision.
